Weatherproof Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets Guide

Key takeaways

  • Welded aluminum and marine-grade polymer handle rain, salt air and UV without rusting, rotting or warping.
  • Weather resistant is not the same as watertight. Expect some water inside during heavy rain, and wipe it out.
  • Every countertop we build is 16-gauge 304 stainless powder coated in grey or tan. We do not ship bare stainless.
  • Straight runs and L-shapes arrive fully assembled with the countertop already installed.
  • Care is simple, but it is not optional. Ten minutes after cooking beats an afternoon in the spring.

What "weather resistant" actually means

Outdoor cabinetry has a harder job than anything inside your house. Rain, humidity, salt air, direct sun, cooking grease and the occasional hard knock all land on the same box, year after year, with no roof and no climate control. Materials decide most of the outcome, but not all of it. Placement, ventilation and a few small habits decide the rest.

We build in Homosassa, Florida, about six miles from the Gulf. Everything we make gets tested by the same weather our customers have, which is one of the few advantages of manufacturing where you live.

Weather resistant does not mean completely watertight

No outdoor cabinet is watertight, and any manufacturer who tells you otherwise has not left one outside through a Florida August. Wind-driven rain finds its way past a door seam. That is normal, and it is designed for.

Every cabinet we build has an aluminum pan floor to manage water that gets in. The floor is not there so you can ignore water, it is there so water has somewhere to go and something to sit on that will not be harmed by it. After a storm, open the doors, check the corners and the floor, and wipe out anything standing. The cabinet does not mind. Your paper towels will.

That distinction matters when you are comparing products. Ask whether a cabinet has a way to manage incidental water, what the care guide says about placement, and what the warranty says about weather. Realistic answers are a better sign than a broad promise.

The role of the 304 stainless countertop

A 304 stainless countertop gives you a hard, cleanable work surface that handles food prep and outdoor cooking. Ours are 16-gauge 304 stainless, powder coated in grey or tan. There is no upcharge for either color, and we do not ship bare stainless.

It still wants sensible care: wipe food residue off, dry the water spots, and do not leave a rusting tool sitting on it overnight. Material choice affects maintenance as much as it affects how the kitchen looks.

The materials we build with

An outdoor kitchen is a system, not a panel. The frame carries the load, the doors take the weather, the countertop takes the work, and the hardware has to survive all three. Judge them separately and then judge how they fit together.

Welded aluminum frames

Every frame we make is welded on a jig in our Homosassa shop, which is how the box comes out square and stays square after it has been on a truck. Welding aluminum extrusions into a continuous structure is different from bolting panels together, because there is nothing in a welded frame that can work loose over ten summers.

Aluminum also does not rust the way ferrous steel does, and it is light enough for its strength that a finished run can be positioned by two or three people rather than a crew. You can read more about how we build them on our how it's built page.

Solid-color doors in King StarBoard ST

King StarBoard ST is the marine-grade polymer we use for solid-color doors and drawers, in twelve colors. It resists rust, delamination and rot under UV, humidity and water, it is highly scratch resistant, and it stands up to most household chemicals.

Clean it with a mild household cleaner and a nylon scrubber, using light pressure. It cannot be painted, so pick a color you will be happy with in five years rather than planning to change it later.

Woodgrain doors in SIMONA Polygrain

SIMONA Polygrain is what we use for woodgrain doors and drawers, in six finishes: Birch, Olyphant Oak, Teak, Susquehanna Grey, Northeastern Walnut and Onyx. The embossed poly surface looks and feels like real wood and asks for none of the maintenance.

Mild dish soap, warm water and a soft cloth handle routine cleaning. Wipe in the direction of the grain to preserve the texture. Abrasive pads, steel wool, harsh solvents and close-range pressure washing will scratch or dull the embossed finish.

Both sheets are colored all the way through, so a scratch does not expose something different underneath, and neither one is a laminate that can peel at the edge.

Why we powder coat every countertop

We powder coat every top we build, grey or tan, and we do not offer bare stainless. Two reasons. A coated top runs cooler after an afternoon in the sun, which matters here. And it does not turn into a mirror at golden hour or show every fingerprint from a Saturday with a full patio.

The grill face, the fridge door and the drawer fronts on your Blaze appliances are still bare stainless, so wipe those in the direction of the grain. Both finishes want prompt cleanup after cooking and a dry-off afterwards.

How color, sunlight and heat affect outdoor surfaces

Dark and light finishes feel different in full sun, and even a powder-coated countertop gets hot after hours of exposure. Coated stays cooler than bare metal, but nothing out there is cool at four in the afternoon in July. Keep hot cookware on a trivet or on the grill's own surface, never on a door or drawer face. A shade structure nearby buys you comfort the materials cannot.

Planning a layout that lasts

Measure the finished pad, not the broad patio. Record width, depth, height changes, nearby walls, overhead restrictions, gates, turns and the narrowest point along the delivery route. A finished kitchen arrives as a substantial unit, so a design that fits the cooking area can still fail at a gate or a stairway. Leave clearance for positioning, leveling, appliance doors and normal movement around the counter.

Straight run or L-shape: how to pick

We build two shapes. A straight run in 5, 6 or 7 feet, and an L-shape at 7 by 4. A straight run is the simplest thing to place along a wall or a patio edge, and it is what most people want. An L gives you a corner, which is worth having if two people cook, if you want prep space that is not also landing space, or if you want the grill turned away from where everyone stands. Pick based on how people move through the yard, not on how many cabinets you can fit into it.

You can price both in the configurator and see what each one does to the total before you decide.

Allowing space for grills, burners, refrigeration and storage

Appliances set the rhythm of the kitchen. A grill needs landing space beside it, a side burner needs a safe operating area, and a refrigerator works best where you can reach it without walking in front of the fire. Leave room for handles, lids, doors and the person using each one.

Trash and LP tank slide-outs come standard in every kitchen we build, so those two jobs are already handled before you start adding storage.

Choosing a weatherproof outdoor refrigerator

An outdoor refrigerator has to be rated for exterior conditions, not just be a small indoor unit. Ours is the Blaze 20-inch: 4.3 cubic feet, UV rated, weatherproof, and sized to sit flush in the cabinet opening. Check the door swing, the ventilation and where the outlet lands before install. A fridge that fits the hole but cannot breathe or open all the way is not a fit.

Ventilation around gas appliances

Ventilation is a safety feature, not a finishing detail. Do not cover the vents, do not pack storage against them, and do not seal an enclosure in a way that stops air moving. Appliance manuals and local code determine the openings and clearances a particular installation needs, and both take priority over anything on this page.

What arrives, and what you do with it

What a fully assembled kitchen means

A fully assembled kitchen shows up as a finished cabinet with the countertop already on it, not as a flat pack. A straight run arrives as one welded piece. An L-shape ships in two sections that bolt together on your patio in about twenty minutes. Then it is placed, leveled and connected to gas. That saves you a weekend of tool work, but it does not save you from preparing the site.

Freight is included to anywhere in the contiguous United States.

How freight delivery affects placement and access

A freight delivery is not a parcel delivery. The carrier needs somewhere practical to stop, and you need a plan for getting the unit from there to the patio. Measure the narrowest point along the route, including gate openings, turns, steps and overhead branches. Protect paving and decking while you move it, and do not drag a cabinet across stone.

Inspect the shipment before you position anything permanently, and photograph any freight damage before you sign.

Leveling on a sloped patio

Outdoor slabs are rarely dead level, especially where drainage was part of the design. Our leveling feet give you up to 1½ inches of adjustment, which covers most patios. Past that, the pad wants correcting before the kitchen arrives.

Measure the fall across the whole run rather than assuming the patio is level because it looks level. Once the kitchen is in place, work the feet gradually and check the countertop in more than one direction. A level cabinet is what makes doors close properly and keeps appliances seated the way they should be.

Keeping it that way

Doors and drawers

Solid-color StarBoard ST takes a mild household cleaner and a nylon scrubby or stiff nylon brush, scrubbed lightly. For grease or oil, a citrus cleaner, alcohol or mineral spirits is usually enough. Never use MEK, turpentine or naphtha on StarBoard ST. Stubborn stains can often be soaked with household bleach, but never use 100 percent pool chlorine.

Woodgrain Polygrain takes mild dish soap, warm water and a soft cloth, wiped along the grain and dried afterwards. On both materials, skip the steel wool, the abrasive pads and the close-range pressure washing.

Sustained temperatures above 150°F will damage the finish on StarBoard ST, so hot cookware and lit cigarettes stay off the doors.

Countertops and appliances

Your powder-coated countertop wants soap, water and a dry-off after use. A light coat of car wax or a powder-coat protectant once or twice a year keeps it even. The bare stainless on your Blaze appliances is the surface that wants a conditioner now and then, wiped with the grain. Neither finish is immune to heat or staining, and prompt cleaning is what keeps the kitchen looking like it did on day one.

Water, hardware and gas

After heavy rain, open the doors and wipe out standing water, paying attention to the pan floor and the rear corners. Keep moisture-sensitive supplies in sealed containers or indoors between uses.

Inspect hinges and drawer slides a few times a year, tighten anything loose before a door starts to sag, and give the moving hardware a silicone-based spray lubricant two or three times a year. LP connections should be inspected annually by a qualified technician, and natural gas lines installed and inspected by a licensed plumber. If you ever smell gas, shut off the supply, ventilate the area and call someone qualified rather than looking for it yourself.

Our outdoor kitchen build guide covers placement, drainage and utilities in more detail if you are still at the planning stage.

What the warranty covers

We back our cabinets with a limited lifetime residential warranty against defects in materials or workmanship, for the original purchaser, under normal residential use and subject to the stated terms. It excludes labor and shipping.

Appliances are separate. Blaze warranties the major components of their grills for life, under their own terms, and countertops, hinges, slides and leveling parts may carry their own coverage. Weather damage, misuse, neglect, modification and improper installation generally fall outside cabinet warranty coverage anywhere you buy, so keep your proof of purchase and photograph anything that goes wrong.

Conclusion

A weather-resistant outdoor kitchen is a set of good decisions stacked on top of each other: a welded frame that will not rust, doors that will not rot, a countertop finished for the sun it will sit in, a layout that suits the way you cook, and ten minutes of care after you use it. Get those right and the kitchen becomes part of the house rather than a project you keep coming back to.

Frequently asked questions

Are outdoor kitchen cabinets waterproof?

No. Outdoor cabinets are built for weather exposure but they are not watertight. Heavy rain or direct spray can put some water inside. Our cabinets have an aluminum pan floor to manage it. Wipe out standing water after a storm and keep moisture-sensitive items somewhere else.

What countertop finishes do you offer?

16-gauge 304 stainless, powder coated in grey or tan. No upcharge for either. We do not offer bare stainless, because a coated top runs cooler in direct sun and does not show every mark.

What layouts do you build?

A straight run in 5, 6 or 7 feet, and an L-shape at 7 by 4. We do not build U-shapes or freestanding modular pieces.

Can I use a pressure washer on the doors?

Not at close range. High pressure can damage finishes and force water into seams. Mild soap, water and a soft cloth or nylon brush are safer and usually faster.

Can the kitchen sit on a sloped patio?

Modest slopes are handled by the adjustable feet, which give up to 1½ inches of travel. A substantially uneven or unstable surface should be corrected before delivery.

Is shipping included?

Yes, to anywhere in the contiguous United States.

Do I need a professional for the gas connection?

Natural gas connections should be made by a licensed plumber. LP systems sho
