2026 Pricing Guide

How Much Does an Outdoor Kitchen Cost?

Real numbers for every type of build, and where the money actually goes.

Updated July 2026 · 6 minute read

Search for outdoor kitchen prices and you'll find everything from $3,000 to $100,000, which is true, and useless. The number depends almost entirely on how you build, not how big you build. Here's the honest breakdown.

The quick answer

Build typeWhat you getTypical total
Fully assembled cabinets + quality grillFinished kitchen delivered to your patio; you place and level it$6,000 – $15,000
DIY frame kit + finishes + appliancesSteel frame you assemble, panel, and counter yourself$5,000 – $12,000
Contractor prefab island installPre-built island, professionally placed and connected$10,000 – $20,000
Custom masonry (contractor)Block-and-stone built on site, custom everything$15,000 – $50,000+

Most homeowners land between $6,000 and $20,000 for a kitchen they're proud of. The $50,000+ builds are buying custom stonework and site labor, not better cooking.

Where the money goes

Cabinets and structure: 35–50% of budget

The single biggest line item, and the biggest quality divider. Contractor masonry runs $300–$600 per linear foot installed. Quality aluminum-frame cabinets with marine-grade poly doors run $600–$900 per linear foot, but arrive finished, with no site labor, no permits for the structure, and no weeks of construction.

Appliances: 25–40%

A quality 32" built-in gas grill runs $1,500–$2,500. Side burners add $450–$950. Outdoor-rated refrigerators run $1,000–$1,500. Beware $500 built-in grills. Outdoor appliances live a hard life, and cheap ones rust out in two seasons. Established brands like Blaze back their grills with lifetime warranties on major components.

Countertops: 10–15%

Granite runs $40–$100 per square foot installed. 304 stainless steel is comparable and unbeatable for sanitation and heat. Skip anything not rated for UV and freeze-thaw.

Utilities: $0 to $3,000+

The stealth budget-killer in contractor builds. Trenching a natural gas line: $500–$2,000. New electrical circuits with GFCI: $300–$800. Plumbed sink drain: $500–$1,500 plus permits. An LP-based kitchen with the tank concealed in the cabinet reduces this line to roughly zero.

The pattern: in contractor builds, roughly a third of your money buys labor, permits, and site logistics, things you can't cook on. Fully assembled kitchens move that third into the cabinets and appliances themselves.

Three real-world budgets

Around $6,500: the smart starter

A 5' fully assembled straight-run cabinet with marine-grade doors and stainless countertop, plus a quality 25" gas grill, trash pull-out, and concealed LP tank. Cooking the day it arrives. No contractor, typically no permits.

Around $9,500: the family workhorse

A 6' or 7' straight run with a 32" grill, double side burner, and premium woodgrain finish. Handles a crowd every weekend.

Around $14,000: the full outdoor room

A 7'×4' L-shape with a 32" grill, side burner, outdoor refrigerator, powder-coated countertop, plus a matching fire table for the seating area. This is the backyard people don't leave.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost of an outdoor kitchen?

Most homeowner builds land between $6,000 and $20,000 complete. Custom contractor masonry averages $15,000–$50,000+, while fully assembled cabinet kitchens with quality appliances typically run $6,000–$15,000.

Is an outdoor kitchen worth the money?

Outdoor living projects consistently rank among the stronger home improvements for enjoyment value, and real estate surveys regularly place outdoor kitchens high on buyer wish lists. The bigger return is use: it turns your backyard into the room your family actually gathers in.

What's the cheapest way to get a real outdoor kitchen?

Skip site construction. Labor, permits, and trades are the costs that don't cook. A fully assembled cabinet with a quality grill delivers the built-in experience at the lowest total cost, typically starting around $6,000 complete.

How much does it cost to add a fire table?

Quality freestanding gas fire tables run $2,000–$4,500 depending on size, burner, and finish. Far less than a built masonry fire pit, with no site work required.
